Sunday was supposed to be my final long run before my 15k race on March 24th. I’m running half of the Around the Bay Roadrace — the oldest race in North America.
I was set to run the total 15k distance as a final training run, but I’m still fighting a cold that has kept me in her clutches all week. I ran 13k the weekend before, so I’m in good shape. Getting in one more long run before race day would be optimal. But I can also prepare by running hills to test my mental and physical fitness.
Or not.
Resting and fully recovering from this cold are also good pre-race plans. If I can’t bear to spend more time on the sofa, I will focus on eating well, hydration, yoga, or strength training. Going for a walk is always good medicine.
I crave the opportunity to crush this goal and move on to the next one. Toeing the line with thousands of runners is a powerful rush. While my mind may clamour about imaginary pains in my knees, hips, guts, or other body parts during the race, my body knows what to do.
We are strong. We are ready.
When is rest the better medicine for you?
Such great lessons in this post, Linda! Great to have a plan that takes care of your cold while you kick it into touch. You've got this!
If ever I’ve seen “ready” it’s you in that picture from about a week ago! You know I’m not a runner (I’m really, really not) so I won’t guess about the shoulds and shouldn’ts. I read remarks by a distance runner concerning fast walking on steep inclines to save energy. Is that frowned on or banned outright at some venues? I know, Linda, you’ll take the decision that serves You best. Sofa surf when needed!
